Easter island heads have bodies!??

Excavations of the bodies have been going on for many years, you can find out more from the Easter Island Statue Project.  It’s generally accepted that the statues were made sometime between 1250 and 1500 AD. There is controversy surrounding why the bodies are buried. Was it time and erosion, or were they buried on purpose?  Aliens?   The soil surrounding the bodies for so long has preserved interesting carvings (petroglyphs, or rock markings)..

This one below has a sailing ship carved onto it…

  3. looks like the first guy sat on his sunglasses– how long has he been staring into it? and he cant blink or scratch his nose for cryin out loud.

  4. They must have really wanted passing sailors to notice the statues and see that there were ppl on the island. Must have been lonely out there in the middle of the huge pacific. No doubt the reason for them.

  5. Assuming they were buried via sedimentation, you would think there would be a way to date them by the layers surrounding them. Also, if they were buried, you wouldn’t expect the surrounding dirt to have layers as shown in the photos.

    1. If the statues were buried by people over a thousand years ago the soil would naturally cause those layers from people and animals walking, driving, and performing whatever other activities they perform in that area. Also weather would have an effect on the layers of the ground, such as rain compressing the soil down, and winds continuously depositing new dirt on top of the thousand year old dirt beneath it. The roots of the grass would also have some effect on compacting the soil.

    1. The island has tons of dirt around it and if you dig a hole then your bound to have dirt to fill the hole you made. I would like to know why they were buried, but thank god they were buried because if not then the etchings on the Moai would have been damaged by the weather.

  6. Why would the bodies have been buried? Can’t they just have sunk into the soil after a while? Makes me wonder what would have kept them up. And maybe that’s what the makers thought: ‘Let’s bury them so they will stay upward.’ I may be way off here though :)
